Colorful Wedding At Mountain Brook Club
It was an all-star Birmingham vendor team for a Mountain Brook Club wedding in October! Grace and John Turner’s “funky fairytale” vision came to life in the most beautiful and surprising way. Keep reading to find out why!
The morning was full of joyful, candid moments shared between Grace and John. The couple were initially pen pals, then became best friends as John was serving in the military. They would write back and forth during his career, and, eventually, they took a chance on a kiss and fell in love! Their wedding was a culmination of years of relationship and a promise to a lifetime of love.
What I noticed during this wedding day, though, was that pops of colour slowly entered the scene … It started with Grace’s getting ready slippers, then the introduction of green bridesmaid dresses, then the pink peony bouquets. But I could never have predicted what came next, even after all the communication and preparation!
After a meaningful ceremony at Canterbury United Methodist where they shared vows beneath floor-to-ceiling stained glass, they exited to a bus that took them back to the Country Club for the night to begin.
As the sun set on the grounds of Birmingham’s elite golf course that fall day, guests were invited into an electric experience that they wouldn’t soon forget. And honestly, I was blown away.
Bright colors from head-to-toe, face painting, glittery head pieces, cold sparks on the dance floor and even feather boas were a huge hit! The surprises just kept coming! Grace and John weren’t afraid to laugh big, look silly as they danced or show emotion throughout the day. They leaned into their uniqueness as a couple and thrived as they watched their guests’ reactions to each creative element.
Even the little details mattered to them! Their phrase “Turner Up!” was on signs; “tinis with the turners” on napkins; Bluebell ice cream was served as a night cap and a disco ball ice sculpture greeted each guest upon arrival.
The guests weren’t the only ones in their element, though. You can’t beat classic golf course bride and groom portraits, but my favorite photos from the day are Grace and John sitting on the chartreuse bar! It was a statement piece that had a creative grip on me. They decorated the bar with an assortment of colorful cakes, pink peonies and other gold pieces.
As a documentary wedding photographer, I love when couples show off their personalities and lean into the fun and hilarious chaos. And better yet, I love when I get to mix documentary work with fine art. The Turners’ day gave so many opportunities to capture big feelings and gorgeous portraits at the same time.
I’ll never forget this wedding day, and I’m constantly grateful for a job that pushes me, surprises me and delights me!
